Global Battery Technology
Samsung is one of the leading companies that patents batteries and energy storage technology.

On September 22, the European Patent Office (EPO) in Munich (Germany) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) published research showing that among the top 10 companies registering patents of global battery technology and other energy storage technologies from 2000 to 2018, 9 companies were Asian companies.

The study shows that during the above period, patenting activity for electricity storage technology increased much faster than all other patenting activity.
For example, in 2018 alone, there were more than 7,000 international patent registrations (IPF) for electricity storage technology, an increase of 7 times compared to 1,000 registrations 20 years ago.

Also according to the study, the leading companies registering patents for batteries and electricity storage technology include Samsung, LG (all from Korea), Panasonic, Toyota (Japan) and Bosch (Germany). Among them, Bosch is the only non-Asian representative in the group of top 10 companies that have registered battery technology copyrights.

In 2018, more than one-third of international patent registrations related to batteries belonged to Japanese companies and inventors. In addition, South Korea, China and the US have also contributed significantly to the increase in battery patents globally since the mid-2000s.

EPO President Antonio Campinos said that electricity storage technology plays an increasingly important role because it meets mobile electricity demand as well as the shift to renewable energy – an essential factor in reducing energy consumption. minimize the impact of climate change.
